One of the primary reasons the United States is the world’s undisputed sole superpower is -
Space.
It’s a titanic continental landmass with vast natural resources. The Atlantic and immense Pacific ocean protect it on both flanks. Its two immediate neighbors are orders of magnitude smaller so they pose no threats and are generally cooperative with US interests.
Now try this thought experiment: The Soviet Union at its height and an ascendant China are America’s immediate neighbors instead.
That certainly changes things doesn’t it?
How would the American trajectory go over decades, centuries if the US was forced to cycle through ever shifting geopolitical relationships with these two hypothetical next door, heavyweight neighbors?
At any time all three nations could go from friendly relations all the way up to full blown enemies on the edge of nuclear conflict, then eventually back to friends/allies, and so on…
Now let’s move away from that and go down a million+ levels down to the individual. You and me.
Let’s use for an example a situation where we have individuals (with considerable influence) in our household or are constantly around in our social environment, that are not aligned with where we want to go in life.
These types of individuals will likely end up siphoning off your energy and problem solving abilities while diverting you from your intended path.
Similar to maritime navigation, a diversion of just a few degrees can prevent you from arriving at your desired destination ever.
If you’re in such a scenario, it is imperative that you find a workable resolution. Your situation is unique to you. I can’t directly advise on that. I’ll just say that I lean towards negotiation and dialogue first before using the harsher approach of flat out cutting off relationships. Properly escalate along the spectrum of options before resorting to that.
However you choose to deal with it, keep in mind the main takeaway: proper space is crucial for your development into a world class superpower!
(Note: This is not a jingoistic or political post in any way whatsoever. Prominent historical figures and observers have remarked on the American geostrategic advantage vis-à-vis the rest of the world for a long time. Just having some fun and hopefully providing the reader with value.)
